Upgrading to New Window Regulators is a Game-Changer for Your 1965 GMC Stepside

Upgrading to New Window Regulators is a Game-Changer for Your 1965 GMC Stepside

In theory, what goes up must come down again. At least that’s the general idea behind a new window regulator for 1965 GMC stepside pickup applications. Too often, the old regulator assembly has seen better days. The window crank stub is sometimes stripped and drilled out to accept some form of coat hanger to keep the crank handle from falling off.

Something to Think About

The gears may be worn to the point that they rattle like grandpa’s teeth in a snowstorm. They may simply slip every time you hit a pothole and send your window crashing down. They may still be functional after 60 years of hard use, but you know they don’t track as smoothly as the day when your truck rolled off the production line. Not even close.

Finding Parts Is Now Easy

Luckily, you don’t have to haunt a hundred junkyards in Kansas to solve these problems. New regulators, built to stringent OEM standards, are the solution you want. Compared to the cost of a midwestern roadtrip, our modern replacement units are fabulously affordable.

DIY Used To Be a Way of Life

It is also true that this is not the same as trying to replace the regulator assembly in an 81 Cadillac or a 22 Mustang. Thanks to intelligent 1960s engineering, you can easily access and service the window regulators in your truck. There is no need to stand on your head or hire some guy with three hands and the patience of a saint to do the job for you. These trucks were designed to be worked on by normal people using the most basic of hand tools. This is certainly a project that virtually anybody can get their DIY vibe going on.

It’s the Little Things That Count

One of the key factors to remember is that you are restoring your truck so that it will be good to go for another 60 years. As long as you have everything opened up anyhow, why don’t you swap out your old parts for a set of new regulators? Your old ones may work just fine—or so you think—but you might be surprised to find out how much better new ones will do. Having a beautiful resto-rod truck is a thing of beauty. Don’t ruin it by saddling yourself with a set of rattletrap window regulators that spoil the overall effect of showroom quality you worked so hard to create.
